It may not have happened yet, but one of these days, life will punch you in the mouth. WHEN that happens, where do you turn? What will you do?
The reactions to adversity vary. Some are able to take on all of life’s good, bad and ugly, and do it seemingly without skipping a beat. Others simply melt down when adversity hits. The difference? Foundation. Those who have a strong one will get knocked back here and there, but only slightly and will always bounce back and keep moving forward. Those who don’t will always be one bout with adversity away from losing control, or at least getting seriously off track.
So what makes a strong foundation? You can start with making sure you have your priorities in order. This is a personal thing, but take a look around at strong foundation models and you’ll find some repeated themes. Faith. Family. Friends. Career. School. Serving Others.
Once you have a good grip on your priorities, take a look at the principles that guide you and your way of living. Commitment. Character. Integrity. Humility. Honor. Are these principles a part of your life? When you hear the question How You Livin’?, do you shy away from the answer? Or, because of the principles that you maintain, do you answer with confidence?
So, how do you build the foundation? The opportunities to reinforce your package of principles and priorities are everywhere. Do you have a role model? Who do you spend most of your time with? What do you watch on T.V. or the internet? What kind of things are you putting into your mind? Are they in line with the principles and priorities that you have decided will be the basis of your foundation? If not, it’s time to re-evaluate. Take a look at how you are living and ask yourself routinely – am I strengthening my foundation or putting cracks into it?
Anybody can build a strong foundation and it is never too late to start. But it’s not easy. And, it is something that needs to be done consistently. Constant disciplined building of your foundation will not only pay off in a big way down the road, but it is an absolute necessity if you want to be able to count on your foundation when tough times come along – and they WILL come along.
So, start building YOUR foundation today……and never stop.
